I gave birth to two children who appear to be less like me than I expected. Our sweet girl seems to have some of my super villain tendencies; however, our son is just like his father. Our baby walks like him, smiles like him, and frankly has the same I love you even though you’re annoyed at me face. (Believe me, I see that face from both of them often). My husband seems terribly amused at having two children that have his personality. He laughs about their troublemaking moments and find their exploration of the world interesting. It has become a small joke between us when the children act out to say whose child is this? We laugh and compare the personalities of our children with our own. We watch their sweet dispositions and the trouble they get into with guidance and encouragement. We correct them when they push and shove in anger and encourage them when they fall or become frustrated. I bandage banged up knees and soothe tears that come with learning new skills. I watch our strong-willed daughter fight with herself in deciding whether to listen to rules or obey her parents. Our son is milder mannered but struggles with His own temper when he doesn’t receive what he wants immediately. He is learning patience but struggles with waiting, as any child does. We debate which parts of our personalities that our children have received but it is easy to overlook that they are just granted to us for our lifetimes. See I gave birth to two beautiful babies, they have their daddy’s smile, laugh, and some of his strong personality but they belong to God first and foremost. As a mother, I find that we have been granted the beautiful gift of raising children with the goal of turning them into the people that He calls them to be. Our job is to raise them to follow His word, be obedient to His will, and to follow His calling. As much as I love our sweet children, I know that motherhood is a wonderful mission that I have been sent on. A mission to raise children that will follow God and call others to follow Him as well. In following my mission, I spend time teaching our children God’s word. We attend church, read His word, and do our best to show the children how to follow God’s calling. When people ask whose child is this, the easy answer is Sharon and Mark’s, but the truest answer is God’s.
Whose child is this?
