Slaying Our Goliath

Content note: This post includes discussion of infertility and pregnancy loss.

Psalm 18:2 David is rescued from Saul and his enemies. David recognized that it was God who answered his prayer for rescue. David knew that God chose him out of everyone and, in turn, knew that God would save him from all of his enemies. A theme of all of the Psalms are cries for help from the Lord, confession, and praise for who He is and what He has provided.
God is never late, His timing is perfect. David was told he would be king, but it took 15 years for him to be crowned king. For David, 15 years might have felt like a lifetime. However, it was in that 15 years that God prepared the way. God made David ready to rule as king. David had to go through many trials, but God was with him. David knew that, relied on that, and took comfort in it.
When we are waiting, when it feels like our whispered prayers are not answered or that help will never come, God is with us. God hears us, but it may not be the right time.
When I tried so hard for a child, I waited in a total of seven years with many losses. It was in that time that God was making me ready. God wanted me to wait. It wasn’t the right time. At first, it wasn’t with the right person, and then there were things in me that needed to change, needed to heal. God never left me, and His timing was perfect.
Today, I am sitting here with my two beautiful children under two. 18 months 1 hour and 12 minutes apart, they are the desire of my heart, and I am grateful. Like David, I cried out to God for help, and he blessed me. Is every day perfect? Are there times when my toddler drives me bananas? Of course! It does not change how wanted and loved my children are. Being a parent means rolling with the good and the bad. It means being there through the 3 a.m. wakeup and colic. It means watching your child take their first steps and watching them dance in the yard. Being a parent is guiding, molding, crying, praying, another human being with their own personality, needs, and wants. Like David and countless other people in the Bible, I was not the most qualified person to raise tiny humans, but God called me to be the mother that they need. I rely on Him daily to help me be a better wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, and person overall. As long as we rely on God, we can make it and slay our own Goliath.
