We are not date night people very often. Most of our out to dinner (or brunch) adventures feature two small humans with large lungs. It has been a while since we sat across from each other without having to pick up snapped crayons, changing diapers, wiping up spills, or asking someone to sit down. This week, however, we had date night. I did my hair, put on makeup, and wore real pants for this! The kiddos went to Nana and Papa’s house while we went to dinner. For two hours, we experienced a meal that wasn’t cold from feeding someone else and conversation that was uninterrupted. It was a nice opportunity to connect with my husband, but I almost felt guilty. I did ask my husband a couple of times if he thought the kids were doing okay. I wondered what our beloved babies were doing, and I knew that they were having a great time. Being a wife and mother is hard sometimes. You want quiet time with your spouse, but you also don’t want to leave the little ones. It’s important to have that time away, though. We are called to put our spouse after God, but before our children. The reason is because our children will leave us to join with their own spouses. God calls us to leave our mother and father to join together, we make a family, and then our children do the same. By connecting with our spouse, we are re-energizing each other. We are remaining committed to building a life together that is not surrounded solely by our children, but our personalities and interests apart and as a couple. Taking time for your spouse is important to you and for your children. Children learn about romantic relationships from their families. Thus, we should be aware of what we put first.
