Content note: This post includes discussion of postpartum anxiety, mental health, therapy, medication, and fertility struggles.
As a mom, I sometimes experience an odd fatigue that I attribute to being sneezed on, coughed on, spit up on, grabbed on, and screamed on. Now, I have mentioned in previous posts how hard it was for me to have children. It took many years and a surgery to remove stubborn polyps in order to be blessed with our children. Overall, I adore being a mom. I love waking up to their sweet little face with their radiant smiles and big hugs. I love watching them grow, learn, and explore. I love being the person to comfort, love, and pray over them. However, I am not perfect, and I get overwhelmed. Honestly, with both children I had post-partum anxiety. I see a therapist, I take medication, and I have internal freak outs that tell me I am the worst mother on earth. Being overwhelmed, or momentarily frustrated, with my children feels like failure. It feels like a slap in the face and complaints for the gifts I prayed so long for. It feels like mom guilt and fears that I was not the best mom for the job. The Bible tells us that thoughts and feelings like these do not come from God, in fact the come from the pit of Hell and are meant to steal our joy. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed or unqualified in any aspect of your life, but what is important to remember is the God doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies the called (and yes, I know I have said this before but it’s important!) The moments that I feel overwhelmed, fatigued, touched out, or on the edge of a panic attack I grab my Bible, or the Bible app on my phone, and I read about who God tells me I am. I remind myself that God made me for a purpose, he put me in this season and this life for a reason. My favorite Bible verse for moments like these come from the Book of Esther, “Perhaps this is the moment for which you have been created” (Esther 4:14). In Esther’s case she was afraid to plead with the King, to whom she was married, to save her people, for me it looks like being a mom to two children 18 months apart. Whatever your circumstances, your season, the calling on your life you feel unqualified for, this might be the moment you were created for. God does not make mistakes, you are here for a reason, you are loved beyond measure, you hold so much worth.
